If you’ve been following my blog posts, I talk a lot about taking responsibility for the choices we make in life. There is a reason that I feel so strongly about owning my mistakes.
If I want to make my mark, if I want to share my unique DNA with the world, I have to come to terms with who I am…really. People who make their mark in this world have no problem telling you about their mistakes. Because all the mistakes, the bad decisions and all the nay-sayers were the driving forces of their success. The catalysts, if you will. How can you learn and move forward if you don’t learn from the things that didn’t go right?
Until you are able to see where you went wrong, you don’t know where to make the adjustments…the little tweaks. I always wanted to hide my mistakes. Embarrassed or maybe felt shame that I blew it. But the truth is we all make mistakes. Duh, right?! Well, if you look at social media, at TV shows, commercials, our friends…they would all have you believe that there is a perfect way to do everything…and you’re not doing it, you’re not in the cool kids club.
It’s all BS, a big smoke screen. Not only is no one doing it perfect…there’s actually is no such thing as the perfectly right way to do anything. There are very few rules in life, but to listen to others you’d think you were doing it all wrong. If you want to make your mark in this world you have to turn your back on the rules. You can’t care what anyone else thinks…no, really…you can’t care what anyone thinks. Because if you do, you will never succeed.
There is something you have to know…people want to see you fail. I know, it sounds harsh, but it is true. Even our friends aren’t excited for us when we are happily doing our life’s work…they won’t ask you how it’s going…you making your mark on the world…it’s not because they don’t care it’s because society has made them feel that you have to hate your job and you must do it anyway. So who are you to enjoy yourself? Take a chance at living a whole-hearted existence? No one actually sees the hard work the constant second guessing wondering if your mark on the world will ever happen. The times when you were alone and trudging up a hill only to see Everest once you reached the top. They only see people reaping rewards, but not the blood sweat and tears.
So, I could go on, but I will save that ramble for another time. This is what I want you to know…if you want something you must go out and get it. Don’t wait for friends or family to bless it. They won’t. Not because they don’t love you, but because they believe there are rules. There aren’t any. This frees you up to go for it. What do you have to lose and what do you have to gain? If you love something so much that you can’t live another moment until you begin the process, then you must begin. People will be jealous and they will tell all the reasons you shouldn’t dream or want. Don’t listen. Listen to the voice inside that’s says, “you got this!” Because you know what? You do. This is how to make your mark…believe.
